… and mail it to who?.., not my local DJ, that’s for sure. Maybe I’ll pop it in a bottle and let the ocean carry it to who knows where. But one thing’s for sure, having your own desert island discs makes you your very own local DJ.. and I’d have to have songs with me for all moods because sometimes you just need a good blast of rock music, nothing else will do. There are many, many bands who fit the bill when it comes to letting rip with a few minutes of good old rock n roll, and my next choice of song for my collection has been covered by pretty much all of them over the years, it’s a classic.
The most famous version of Roll Over Beethoven was done by Chuck Berry, since then many bands have recorded it and given it their own personal touch, some good, some not so. But I’d have my own favourite version with me, a proper rock rendition of this well loved tune. It’s by Mountain. Felix Pappalardi, Corky Laing, Steve Knight…, and the incredible Leslie West. Between them they put some real rock into the song, especially Leslie West on the guitar who, in my humble opinion, is one of the finest rock guitarists around.
This song just rocks.. that’s it… and when I’m in the mood for just turning up the volume and rattling the windows this fits the bill perfectly. Mountain are near the top of my list when it comes to rock music, they play it like it should be played… hard and loud, otherwise what’s the point?…., yes, nothing compares to a quick blast of Mountain when the mood arises…

They were a great band, they played at the original Woodstock festival and Leslie West has made some very good solo albums… cheers.
