About

Desert Island Discs is programme on BBC Radio 4, it’s been one of the most popular radio shows for decades. It started in 1942 and each week a guest is interviewed on the show. During the course of the interview they are asked to choose eight records that they would take with them to a desert island, simple format but it’s a very good radio show. So with that in mind I’ve decided to use that format as a basis for this blog, only there will be a heck of a lot more than eight songs… and instead of it being someone famous choosing their songs…, it’s just me.

What music would you like to have with you if you were marooned on a desert island?…. a question that’s been asked many times in the past. Of course, it used to be desert island discs… records, but now in the age of the laptop you’d be able to have much more music with you on your desert island. Desert Island Digital is a music blog… pure and simple…. a blog about the songs I’d like to have with me on my desert island, and why.

So, it’s just music…, with a few stories and opinions thrown in along the way, plus links to some decent websites and a few good.. free… audio programs.

Welcome to Desert Island Digital.

The songs are stored and hosted on MyBloop.com and MusicWebTown.com. If you want to play them use the player on the blog or click on the highlighted text on the others. Clicking the highlighted text will take you to the Bloop Player where the music will start automatically, or right click the link to open it in a seperate tab. I’m striving to make sure the music loads and plays so I’ve used both to start with, although whenever possible I’ll use the embedded player on the blog as I find this to be the most reliable…, providing I don’t exceed bandwidth…, I dislike dead links as much as the next person, I’m constantly testing them so I’m hoping they’ll be ok… However, I’ve been around computers long enough to know that they won’t work for everyone, and if they don’t work for you then I do apologise. I test them in four different browsers and apart from the odd glitch they work fine… and just as a footnote, I use Firefox 3 and Opera 9.5 and I’m getting excellent audio playback results, not only on this blog but on other music blogs as well… so maybe that’s the future for stuff like this, I don’t know, I’m no expert but they certainly seem to stream media better.

Here’s the Desert Island Discs theme tune. It’s called By The Sleepy Lagoon, by The Eric Coates Symphony Orchestra…, and I have to say it took some finding.
